w00t

Are you kidding me? Word of the Year?

Just what is “w00t?” (the ‘00′ are zeros)

According to Reuters:

“w00t,” an expression of joy coined by online gamers, was crowned word of the year on Tuesday by the publisher of a leading U.S. dictionary.

Massachusetts-based Merriam-Webster Inc. said “w00t” — typically spelled with two zeros — reflects a new direction in the American language led by a generation raised on video games and cell phone text-messaging.

It’s like saying “yay,” the dictionary said.

“It could be after a triumph or for no reason at all,” Merriam-Webster said.

By the way, the runner-up was “facebook.”

According to wikipedia:

W00t is a hybrid of letters and numbers, used by gamers as an expression of happiness, joy, and excitement. The origin of the term is widely disputed. Some claim that word originated in competitive online gaming as an acronym for “we own other team.” Others trace the current-day use of the word w00t to hackers in the early to mid 80’s who used it as a term of celebration for gaining root access in Unix systems. Still others attribute the term to players of Dungeons and Dragons, being short for “Wow, loot!”. Regardless of the true origin, the term has since adopted a more general meaning. This word was Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year for 2007.[1]

According to John Morse, the President of Merriam-Webster, “w00t” was an ideal choice for the Word of the Year because it blends whimsy and new technology.

Huh???? Before today, I had never heard of the word.

Umm…Hey Mr. Morse, for some reason I don’t see this as becoming a widespread word, seeing that the majority of people in the world aren’t techno game junkies who live with their mothers. :-( Additionally, I think you should have asked the general public to describe “w00t” or “facebook” and see which is more recognized.

Would you consider WTF???

Led Zeppelin

Ok, by now you have heard about Led Zeppelin’s benefit concert. I’ve seen some clips and I have to say that Robert Plant and the boys still rock and look great.

Robert Plant 2007

Plant, 59, is a little grayer but still sports his long blond locks. Jimmy Page, 63, looks like Doc Brown’s rockin brother and can still play a heavy chord. Bassist John Paul Jones was invited back to play while drummer John Bonham’s son, Jason filled in. Since Bonham died in 1980, the group ceased touring together.

Their Set List:

  • “Good Times Bad Times”
  • “Ramble On”
  • “Black Dog”
  • “In My Time of Dying”
  • “For Your Life”
  • “Trampled Under Foot”
  • “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”
  • “No Quarter”
  • “Since I’ve Been Loving You”
  • “Dazed and Confused”
  • “Stairway to Heaven”
  • “The Song Remains the Same”
  • “Misty Mountain Hop”
  • “Kashmir”
  • “Whole Lotta Love”
  • “Rock and Roll”

Tickets originally cost $254 and were available through a ballot to fans who registered at http://www.ahmettribute.com. The site had more than a million entries and 25 million hits and crashed as about 80,000 fans a minute clicked on it. One fan reportedly paid $168,000 for a ticket.

The concert footage is creating a big hoopla on YouTube now according to PC World:

Video clips of legendary rock band Led Zeppelin’s reunion show in London on Monday are reappearing hourly on YouTube despite efforts to remove the material due to alleged copyright infringement. YouTube warns users in its “help center” that they may not own the rights to upload concert footage to its site.

Some links to videos of the band’s performance lead to a red warning that says the video has been removed “due to a copyright claim by Warner Music Group.”

Fans are screaming for more – a world tour.

Webistes are rumoring an American tour but I’ll believe that when tickets actually go on sale. :-)

See more pictures from the Daily Mail.

Visit the group’s website too – very vintage of their rock days.

Guess I need to start saving now just in cast they SHOULD come to Madison Square Garden. ;-)
