You Can’t Escape Facebook

In College, Facebook, Just News, MySpace, Technology on February 11, 2008 at 10:06 am

Be careful what you post online because it will be out there FOREVER. This goes for not only Facebook, but images captured from blogs, MySpace, and other social networking sites.

From the New York Times:

Some users have discovered that it is nearly impossible to remove themselves entirely from Facebook, setting off a fresh round of concern over the popular social network’s use of personal data.

While the Web site offers users the option to deactivate their accounts, Facebook servers keep copies of the information in those accounts indefinitely. Indeed, many users who have contacted Facebook to request that their accounts be deleted have not succeeded in erasing their records from the network.

In response to difficulties faced by ex-Facebook members, a cottage industry of unofficial help pages devoted to escaping Facebook has sprung up online — both outside and inside the network.

“I thought it was kind of strange that they save your information without telling you in a really clear way,” said Magnus Wallin, a 26-year-old patent examiner in Stockholm who founded a Facebook group, “How to permanently delete your facebook account.” The group has almost 4,300 members and is steadily growing.

Facebook’s Web site does not inform departing users that they must delete information from their account in order to close it fully — meaning that they may unwittingly leave anything from e-mail addresses to credit card numbers sitting on Facebook servers.

Only people who contact Facebook’s customer service department are informed that they must painstakingly delete, line by line, all of the profile information, “wall” messages and group memberships they may have created within Facebook.

But even users who try to delete every piece of information they have ever written, sent or received via the network have found their efforts to permanently leave stymied. Other social networking sites like MySpace and Friendster, as well as online dating sites like eHarmony.com, may require departing users to confirm their wishes several times — but in the end they offer a delete option.

Facebook’s quiet archiving of information from deactivated accounts has increased concerns about the network’s potential abuse of private data, especially in the wake of its fumbled Beacon advertising feature.

That application, which tracks and publishes the items bought by Facebook members on outside Web sites, was introduced in November without a transparent, one-step opt-out feature. After a public backlash, including more than 50,000 Facebook users’ signatures on a MoveOn.org protest petition, Facebook executives apologized and allowed such an opt-out option on the program.

The network is still trying to find a way to monetize its popularity, mostly by allowing marketers access to its wealth of demographic and behavioral information. The retention of old accounts on Facebook’s servers seems like another effort to hold onto — and provide its ad partners with — as much demographic information as possible.

As mentioned, you and your friends are not the only ones looking at your personal pages. Who’s reading your facebook and MySpace pages? Potential or present employers keep tabs on your actions to see if you are “material” that is worth keeping in the company. Additionally, schools and universities have spied on their students and in some cases, taken disciplinary action against students who have pictures showing underage drinking or anything that paints their institution in a negative light.

If you don’t want it coming back and biting you in the butt down the line, don’t post it on the internet today!

Led Zeppelin Resurrected

In Entertainment, Just News, Music, news, YouTube on December 12, 2007 at 2:45 pm

Led Zeppelin

Ok, by now you have heard about Led Zeppelin’s benefit concert. I’ve seen some clips and I have to say that Robert Plant and the boys still rock and look great.

Robert Plant 2007

Plant, 59, is a little grayer but still sports his long blond locks. Jimmy Page, 63, looks like Doc Brown‘s rockin brother and can still play a heavy chord. Bassist John Paul Jones was invited back to play while drummer John Bonham’s son, Jason filled in. Since Bonham died in 1980, the group ceased touring together.

Their Set List:

  • “Good Times Bad Times”
  • “Ramble On”
  • “Black Dog”
  • “In My Time of Dying”
  • “For Your Life”
  • “Trampled Under Foot”
  • “Nobody’s Fault But Mine”
  • “No Quarter”
  • “Since I’ve Been Loving You”
  • “Dazed and Confused”
  • “Stairway to Heaven”
  • “The Song Remains the Same”
  • “Misty Mountain Hop”
  • “Kashmir”
  • “Whole Lotta Love”
  • “Rock and Roll”
  • led-zeppelin-ticket.jpg

Tickets originally cost $254 and were available through a ballot to fans who registered at http://www.ahmettribute.com. The site had more than a million entries and 25 million hits and crashed as about 80,000 fans a minute clicked on it. One fan reportedly paid $168,000 for a ticket.

    Led Zeppelin in London

The concert footage is creating a big hoopla on YouTube now according to PC World:

Video clips of legendary rock band Led Zeppelin’s reunion show in London on Monday are reappearing hourly on YouTube despite efforts to remove the material due to alleged copyright infringement. YouTube warns users in its “help center” that they may not own the rights to upload concert footage to its site.

Some links to videos of the band’s performance lead to a red warning that says the video has been removed “due to a copyright claim by Warner Music Group.”

Fans are screaming for more – a world tour.

Webistes are rumoring an American tour but I’ll believe that when tickets actually go on sale. 🙂

See more pictures from the Daily Mail.

Visit the group’s website too – very vintage of their rock days.

Guess I need to start saving now just in cast they SHOULD come to Madison Square Garden. 😉

Deborah Harry: Still Punk After All These Years

In Culture, Entertainment, Just News, Music on October 16, 2007 at 7:59 am

The Muppet Show www.deborahharry.comphoto by Andy Warhol

Deborah Harry then and now…even Andy Warhol photographed her during her early career.

Wow, talk about pulling out the time capsule this morning. The New York Times has a story about one of my favorite bands from the late 70’s and early 80’s. Deborah Harry, front woman for the punk-pop band Blondie is still edgy and making music 30 years later.

Harry, who is 62 now, has released her first solo album in 14 years entitled “Necessary Evil.” Still looking good, Harry says that her album doesn’t reflect her single status (she was romantically involved with fellow bandmate Chris Stein for many years). Her album is “Like most pop songs it’s about relationships, it’s about sex,” she said. “I’m in love with love — sometimes.”

Read the story from the NY Times here.

Now, reaching back into the video vault, here are a couple songs you will surely know. And for you younger kids, “Rapture” was the first rap song not just by a woman, but by anyone to make it to #1… It’s ok if her lyrics don’t make any sense. She was great to watch! 😉

The White House Remembers the Events of 9/11

In 9/11, Congress, Culture, Just News, Military, news, Politics, War in Iraq on September 11, 2007 at 1:11 pm

    From the AP:

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Bush, joined by his wife, the vice president, Cabinet members, White House janitors, kitchen workers and groundskeepers, somberly marked the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. They all observed a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., Tuesday—the exact moment in 2001 when terrorists slammed the first jetliner into the World Trade Center in New York.

The president stood with First Lady Laura Bush and Dick and Lynne Cheney on the South Lawn during the simple ceremony that has been repeated each year since the attack. Dressed in dark suits, the four of them bowed their heads as a member of the Honor Guard stood nearby, holding an American flag.

Bush stood sternly as the Marine band, stationed behind him on the South Portico of the White House, played “God Bless America.” Mrs. Bush then took his arm and they walked inside along with the Cheneys.

To honor the memories of those killed six years ago, all members of the White House staff were allowed to join in. On the front row of one side of the crowd stood Cabinet secretaries and other dignitaries; on the other side were kitchen workers dressed in white and janitors, groundskeepers and other blue-collar workers.

Among the scores of people in the crowd was former chief of staff Andrew Card, the one who first whispered the news to Bush on the day of the attacks.

Bush did not speak. Occasionally, the rumble of jet planes taking off and landing at nearby Reagan Washington National Airport broke the silence.

On a gray, humid day in Washington, Bush began with a prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Lafayette Square across from the White House.

The Rev. Luis Leon preached that each anniversary of Sept. 11 presents a dilemma—how to remember the day that changed the lives of everyone who lived through it, yet also move on with life. He said religious faiths have their differences, but they all strive for peace, love and justice.

    5-Year-Old Drives Drunk Mom Home

In Are you kidding me?, Just News, news on August 30, 2007 at 2:13 pm

    Mugshot from SmokingGun.com

    This story appauls me.

Are you kidding me? Not only should this child get a reward for not killing himself, his brother, and his mother, but he needs some counseling about his mother’s behavior.

Holly Schnobrich was arrested Tuesday for letting her child drive her home while she was blazingly drunk and high on pills. A neighbor saw the woman’s car rip around the corner and saw that the woman’s 5-year-old son was behind the wheel. When the neighbor questioned the intoxicated woman about the child driving, the drunk responded, “He’s a good driver.” For the love of God…

When the police questioned the woman, she said that she was driving a friend home and insisted the person was in the car. No such person was – only the 5-year-old and his 3-year-old brother.

I only hope that the welfare of the children is being closer examined by the state.

Republicans Stepping Back From Sen. Craig

In Congress, Just News, news, Politics on August 29, 2007 at 9:00 am

    Picture from CNN.com

Sounds like Republicans are getting as far away as possible from Sen. Larry Craig and the hoopla about his arrest. Craig was arrested back in June at a Minneapolis airport for supposedly soliciting sex in the airport bathroom. The arrest came as a result of a sting by police to catch would-be solicitors. Craig has denied that he was doing anything wrong and has maintained that he is not gay and is innocent; although he initially pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.

Presidential contenders John McCain and Mitt Romney are both speaking out againts Craig. Craig had been a part of Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign but has since stepped down because of the arrest. Romeny has said. “”He’s disappointed the American people.”

I’m not so sure about all of Craig’s assurances that he is completely innocent. I find it very hard to believe that an intelligent senator would accept a guilty plea, keep the arrest from his family, and try to handle the whole situation on his own. As a strong supporter of gay marriage and gay rights, he is very adamant that he is not gay. Guess time will tell.

Giuliani and Romney Snubs YouTube Debate

In Are you kidding me?, Culture, Election 2008, Internet, Just News, Media, news, Politics, Technology, YouTube on August 2, 2007 at 4:37 pm

    youtube_logo.jpg

Right after the Democratic YouTube debate last month I heard many people on TV and radio talking about the “type” of people the debate brought out. “Type?” Oh wait…what they meant to say is that the online community that participated in submitting questions for the panel did not fit the mold of past preselected participants. I also heard some commentators call the debate a joke and this type of online forum was making a mockery out of serious politics. Serious politics??? Good God.

So obviously when I read that the September Republican YouTube debate was going to interfere with Rudolph Giuliani and Mitt Romney fund raising schedules, I was a little miffed. But then Romney said that this type of online format was “demeaning.”Good God. My blood began to boil. Demeaning? Are you guys that narrow minded to believe that the YouTube audience is not part of the voting public? Why don’t you just go ahead and shoot yourself in the other foot by saying that this type of forum will only hurt your chance for a presidential run. Nonetheless, I think more than anything Romney and Giules might just be afraid of the “type” of people and questions they will have to face. I really expected more from Giuliani.

Now Giuliani and Romney are trying to run damage control on their statements. Read the whole story from the New York Times here (free subscription required.)

Robin Roberts To Battle Breast Cancer

In Culture, Health, Just News, Media, news, Sports on July 31, 2007 at 3:52 pm

    Robin Roberts from ABC.com

One of my heroes, Robin Roberts, announced this morning that she has breast cancer but is ready to take it on. She made her announcement on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer by her side. She says the cancer is in the early stages and that surgery has been scheduled for this Friday.

For the story in Robin’s own words, read here.

    The AP’s story is here:

NEW YORK – ABC “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be undergoing surgery Friday.

Roberts, 46, told viewers about her cancer on Tuesday morning’s show.

“I am so blessed that I found this in the early stages and the prognosis is so promising that my doctor expects me to be flying planes and hanging on to submarines in the middle of the Atlantic and scaling the Mayan pyramids in no time,” she said.

Roberts, who is co-anchor of “Good Morning America” with Diane Sawyer, said she examined herself and found a lump on her breast the same day she had done a report on former “GMA” movie critic Joel Siegel, who died of colon cancer last month. The network wouldn’t say which breast was affected.

Roberts, who is single, said there is no history in her family of breast cancer.

She’s been a contributor to ABC’s morning program since 1995 and was the newsreader before being named in May 2005 as one of the show’s anchors.

Former ABC news anchor Peter Jennings announced on “World News Tonight” in April 2005 that he had lung cancer. He never appeared on the air again and died four months later.

Read Robin’s bio too. Do any of you remember her from her ESPN days???

Hey Robin – You can do this!
