A blog about Politics, Texas, and Academia

What is “Off the Grid?”

Well, if you are a “24” fan, then you know the expression. When Jack Bauer doesn’t want to be detected, he goes “Off the Grid.”

As for the blog, it’s just a place to speak freely about whatever interests me that day. You may see a post on 24, Texas politics, political news, political satire and spoofs, and occasionally, serious news.

Born in San Diego and having the opportunity to travel with a father in the Navy and a husband in the Army, I ended up in Fort Hood, Texas in 1996. Following a job offer in 2001, we picked up and moved again – this time to Houston. I have to say, for being reluctant about living in a such a large and diverse city, the experience of Houston has grown on me and I absolutely love it.

My own children are somewhat grown now; one is in college and one is in high school. I decided to go back to school in 2005. What a wake-up call. It’s been quite interesting to sit between students who are my son’s age. The students have been great. Some call me mom and some have nicknamed me “Poli Sci Mom.” Either way, I have fit in pretty well and have made some wonderful relationships – with students and professors. I definitely have more respect for studying now then I did 20 years ago! Geez, I graduated high school in 1989!

I’ve recently graduated from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, earning a B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration. Additionally, I have a minor in Theology. Good combination for political studies huh? πŸ˜€ Funny enough, my undergraduate senior thesis was titled, “Political Blogs: Are They an Influence in the Political Realm?”

I’m staying on at UST for graduate work and already preparing on my Master’s thesis – expanding on the undergraduate research. Someday I hope to shape young college minds, just as certain professors have helped to shape mine. πŸ™‚

Take a look around. I try not to be too serious all the time. I welcome comments whether you agree or disagree with a post, but if any are laced with vulgarity, they will not remain long. Obviously the blog is very blue so I’m sure you can quickly figure out which side of the voting booth I stand in. However, I try to remain open about the entire political realm – both nationally and internationally. But honestly, who can’t help but laugh at a few pokes about the Bush administration every now and then.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Theresa, a.k.a. PoliSci Mom

The White House Project…where American politics hits the dancefloor!

    Kind Regards

  4. Thanks for the link info! I’ll check it out πŸ™‚

  5. Well hello! I just did a quick search and found your site. Like you, I went to study poli sci as an ‘adult’ but in a bit of a different order and environment than you. I’d love to go back and do a Masters but since I have two fairly young kids (but getting older, 5 and 10 respectively), I find that my ‘head-space’ is there yet. Hence I ‘just’ have my own political blog and like you, I post on other things as well.
At any rate, I’ll add you to my blogroll but that said, it is for now in my ‘favourites’ link..(it’s soo long).. one of these days I’ll update it and put my blogger friends in their rightful place; next to me in the sidebar! Good luck with your Masters..

    Ingrid, from Austin TX

  6. PS…my head-space is NOT there yet..ha..(obviously..it’s called ‘still needing to be able to sleep through the night, pah!)

  8. Have you read “The Creature From Jekyll Island” by G. Edward Griffin??? Politics takes on a whole new meaning after reading that book.

  9. I was hoping you could provide a source for the Republican elephant v Democratic donkey image embedded in the post at https://politicsoffthegrid.wordpress.com/2008/02/05/super-tuesday-has-arrived/

  10. Very cool. I’m doing a similar blog to yours, that you might find interesting: http://milwaukeetodc.wordpress.com/

I’ll definitely be following your posts. Good luck with everything!

  11. I have been absent for some time, but now I remember why I used to love this web site. Thanks , I’ll try and check back more often. How frequently you update your site?
